I graduated from Lincoln College with a Certificate of Wool Classing in 1967 under the tutorship of Prof Henderson, Jack Simpson and Bruce Tinnock whose guiding principles have been the foundation of my classing and sheep breeding career - that being the breeding and presentation of quality wool irrespective of breed type.

Bill is originally from a half-bred farming background in the Kaikoura area. In 1988 he studied extramurally at Massey to gain the Certificate of Wool Handling Systems followed by his merino and shed classer status.
With the sale of his farm, Bill shifted to Sefton in 2004, and took over an engineering business but continued to attend Fibre Select days to maintain contact with the industry.
In 2007 he sold the engineering business and re-entered the rural community when he began a new enterprise of servicing lifestyle properties and wool classing, with a number of clients in the Awatere Valley.
Bill has been involved in many community organizations over the years such as Young Farmers, Federated Farmers, and School Board of trustees, and more recently with Land Search and Rescue where he is now one of six Police LandSAR advisors in Canterbury. He is keen to promote classing as a vital part of clip improvement for the wool industry and to encourage young people to take up the challenge of classing.

Wool classer, NZWCA Board Member, first became interested in wool as a young eight year old lad, "wagging" school to help the Wool Handlers while the Shearers were being judged.
"I worked for Fred Peyton, Shearing Contractor, on leaving school".
"Fred was a Wool Classer and encouraged me to go to Lincoln College in 1970, to complete the wool classing course. On finishing the course, I became self-employed and started my own Contract Shearing gang, with me in the role as Classer".
Graeme, a noted Wool Handling Competitor was recognized by Shear Sports New Zealand, with the "Master Wool Handler" plaque. He is still very much involved with wool handling competitions as a Judge and is New Zealand Merino Shears current President.
Graeme served, three terms as President of the New Zealand Shearing Contractors Association, and became the Inaugural Chairman of NZWCA. Graeme is heavily involved with his Community, being elected for six terms on the Central Otago District Council, Inaugural Trustee of Central Lakes Trust and retired Trustee of the Otago Community Trust, and is the current Chairman of the Central Otago Justice of the Peace Association, along with supporting many Community groups and organisations.
In the 40 years Graeme has been classing wool, he has always enjoyed his association with the Growers and the people who serve the industry. His most memorable moment was being awarded the Merino Association Merit Award for 2002/2003, adding to a number of commendations.
I am pleased to be representing the Classers on the NZWCA Board.

From Motueka-Nelson, I started my life in the shearing scene on my 21st birthday Cooking. My Cooking career was short lived however as I went on to become a woolhandler. Working with wool then became my life long passion. This passion has taken me around New Zealand, the UK and Australia, enabling me to work a long side my heros and mentors.
In 1992 I competed in Woolhandling competitions which was confidence building, then I went onto gaining my Certificate In Wool from Lincoln Universtity. Later on achieving recommendations for xbred and merino clips I classed.
I have also helped manage a shearing contract/Holiday camp, front desked at a Hospital, completed a Tourism and a Computing course and was part owner of a courier business. At present, I still work actively as a woolhandler and class a run in Tarras, Otago. My aim now is to give back to the wool industry by becoming a mentor.

I began my career in wool straight from School with Wrightson in Wanganui as a wool industry cadet in 1990.
I completed the wool diploma at Massey university and was transferred to Dunedin in 1994 about the time wool supply contracts were first starting. I was seconded to the NZ Merino Company when it was formed in 2001 firstly involved in the administration of the contracts and then moved on to more of the practical side working in the field with wool growers and helping to identify wool that was suitable for specific contracts. I have been an auctioneer for just over 10 years and so are also heavily involved in the auction side of the wool business also. Through both the auction and contracts a key part of my role is working with the growers, classers, shed-hands and contractors to ensure wool is prepared to its optimum for the market.
I am the Otago region Area manager for The New Zealand Merino Company and my primary role within the company is to develop new business from grower customers, offer physical contracts, liaise with growers with regard to selling options and work with growers, wool classers, shearing contractors and shed staff to ensure wool is presented optimally for both the auction and for contracts. The Area Managers are the link between the grower community and the New Zealand Merino Company. I am also the auctioneer for the NZ Merino wool sold in Melbourne.
